Richard Bard, son of Thomas Bard, was chosen by his father to carry on the family business. Richard was barely out of university (Princeton) when his father died in 1915. Richard knew of Thomas’ wish to create a harbor at Hueneme, and he spent fourteen difficult years going back and forth to Washington, DC, attempting and finally succeeding in bringing this wish to fruition (without federal funding) in 1939.The book pictured below by Powell Greenland, author of several books (Port Hueneme, a History; Hydraulic Mining in California, a Tarnished Legacy; and Ventura County’s Maritime Legacy) details this struggle.
